What Causes Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

The "Irritable" in Irritable Bowel Syndrome means the nerve endings on the lining of the bowel are unusually sensitive.

These nerve endings control the muscles of the colon and they are unusually active in IBS. Yet, in IBS there is no evidence of bowel disease.

While the cause of IBS is not completely understood, symptoms appear to be the result of this increased sensitivity.

Lactose intolerance can have similar symptoms to IBS, but is a different problem.

Why Does IBS Occur?

It is not known why this disorder manifests in some individuals and not in others. A severe case of gastroenteritis, or the "stomach flu," can sometimes precipitate the onset of IBS.

There is also evidence to suggest that IBS develops after a major life stressor.

It may be that exposure to severe or chronic stress causes the system to burn itself out, resulting in ongoing sensitivity that manifests as IBS. Researchers are focusing on the connections between the brain and the enteric nervous system (responsible for governing the process of digestion) to better understand and treat IBS.

Triggers of IBS

Exposure to stress, certain types of food and unhealthy eating habits may set off or aggravate any IBS symptoms like bloating, nausea and gas.
